Terms of use

Effective 14 October 2026

These terms apply to the PianoKite app and this website. PianoKite is made by an independent developer ("we"). By using the app or the website you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

The service

PianoKite helps you learn to play the piano. It connects to digital pianos over MIDI, can listen through the microphone, shows music as a scrolling score and keyboard, and scores your playing. We work to keep it accurate and available, but we can't promise that it will always work with every piano, phone or Android version, or that it will be free of errors. Features may change over time.

Accounts

You can use the app without an account. If you create one, you're responsible for keeping your sign-in details secure and for what happens under your account. Give accurate information and use only your own email address. You can delete your account at any time in the app (see how to delete your account). We may suspend or close accounts that abuse the service, for example by attempting to access other users' data or overloading our servers.

Subscriptions

The app is free to download, with a free plan. Paid plans, when available, are sold as auto-renewing subscriptions through Google Play (or the App Store). Prices are shown in the store before you buy. Billing, renewals, cancellations and refunds are handled by the store under its own terms: you can cancel any time in your store account, and the subscription stays active until the end of the period you've paid for. Prices shown on this website are planned prices and may change before launch; the price in the store at the time of purchase is the one that applies.

The music library

The pieces in the library are public-domain compositions in files that are public domain or under open Creative Commons licenses, from the Mutopia Project and from public-domain scores on MuseScore (via the PDMX dataset). Each piece's credit, license and source are shown on its page on this website and in the app's About & licenses page.

  • This website offers a 20-second preview of each piece in an in-browser player. The source files remain under their own licenses (credited on each piece page): files under CC BY or CC BY-SA require the credit shown there, and CC BY-SA adaptations must be shared under the same license.
  • A subscription pays for the app's features around the library (the scrolling score, Wait mode, play-along, scoring, sync, the lessons and the curated, levelled collection), not for the music itself.

We've reviewed every piece to make sure it can be shared legally. If you believe a piece infringes your rights, tell us (see Contact) and we'll look at it promptly and remove it if needed.

Your content

MIDI files you import stay yours. If you're signed in, we store them in your account so they sync to your devices; we don't publish them or use them for anything else. Only import files you have the right to use.

Acceptable use

Don't misuse the app, the website or our servers: no attempts to access data that isn't yours, to bypass plan restrictions, to scrape or bulk-download our servers in ways that harm the service, or to reverse engineer the app except as the law allows.

Intellectual property

The app, its design and its code, and the text of this website, belong to us. The music files belong to their respective creators and are used under their licenses. The piano sound is the YDP Grand Piano by FreePats, used under CC BY 3.0. Third-party names such as Roland, Yamaha, Casio and Kawai are trademarks of their owners and are used only to describe compatibility; we're not affiliated with them.

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

The app and website are provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

Play at a comfortable volume, especially with headphones, and take breaks.

Changes

We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell you in the app. If you keep using the app after a change, the new terms apply.

Contact

Questions about these terms: contact the developer through the contact details on the app's Google Play listing, or reply to any email we've sent you. You can also email hello@pianokite.com.
