Learning on an acoustic piano (microphone)

Updated

No MIDI? No problem. PianoKite can listen to your piano through the phone's microphone and recognise the notes you play. It works with upright and grand pianos, and with digital pianos that have no Bluetooth or USB MIDI.

How it works

The app analyses the microphone signal on the phone itself, detecting when a note starts and what its pitch is. Nothing is recorded or uploaded. It listens while the app is open, and stops when you leave the app or when a MIDI piano is connected (so notes don't count twice).

The sound check

The first time, a short sound check sets things up:

  1. Room check: stay quiet for a moment while the app measures the background noise.
  2. A few notes: play the A above middle C (this also measures how far your piano is from standard tuning, since acoustic pianos often drift), then middle C, the C an octave below, and a C major chord.
  3. If some notes aren't heard, you can make the app listen more closely, at the cost of a few more false notes.

Tips for good results

  • Put the phone on the music stand, close to the strings.
  • On an acoustic piano, open the lid or the top for a clearer sound.
  • A quiet room helps: no TV, music or conversation nearby.
  • Wear headphones so the app's own music (the other hand, the count-in) isn't heard as your playing.
  • Play with a clear, firm touch, especially in a noisy room.

Limits, honestly

Hearing notes from sound is harder than reading MIDI. It takes a moment longer, and it's less certain with very fast runs, low bass notes and thick chords. For melodies and most beginner and intermediate pieces it works well; for advanced repertoire, or for the most precise timing scores, a MIDI connection is better. If you have a digital piano with Bluetooth MIDI or USB, connect it instead.

Good first pieces for the microphone are slow, clear melodies: Swan Lake, Brahms' Lullaby (Wiegenlied) or anything in the calm collection.
