About this piece

Written by Friedrich Burgmüller (1806–1874), L'Adieu is a fast minor-key piece with real energy, in the Romantic style. The version here is level 3 of 5 (intermediate), in A minor and about 0:53 long. Note the pickup: the music starts with an upbeat before the first full bar, so count yourself in before the first note.

About Friedrich Burgmüller (1806–1874): German composer who settled in Paris. His 25 Easy and Progressive Studies, Op. 100, are charming character pieces that teach real technique.

How to play L'Adieu on piano

  1. Split the piece into sections and learn them one at a time, hands separately first.
  2. Loop the bars that keep going wrong. The app's per-bar feedback shows exactly where they are, so you don't waste time on the bars you already know.
  3. Move up the play-along speeds in steps, 50% then 75% then 100%, only when a section is clean at the current speed.
  4. It's a fast piece. Resist playing it at full tempo until it's accurate at a slower one; speed built on wrong notes doesn't last.
  5. Short daily sessions beat one long weekly one. Ten focused minutes a day is enough to make steady progress.

In the PianoKite app you can learn it with your own digital piano over Bluetooth or USB, or with any piano through the microphone: the score scrolls past a playhead, the keys light up, and every bar gets a score so you can see what's learned.
